Only a few steps from the Pantheon, there’s a church that Romans nicknamed “la chiesa di zucchero,” meaning the “icing sugar church.” But why?
This church was first built in the 1500s as the headquarters of the Order of the Camillians. In the 1600s, the Camillians rebuilt it and opened the square in front of it: Piazza della Maddalena.
Its façade is in the Rococo style (think of it as Baroque style taken to the next level). At the time, this style was quite unusual for a church and was heavily criticized. Too many curves, too many decorations…
And when Romans don’t like something, they quickly give it a nickname 😅
