Just steps from St. Peter’s in Rome, you’ll find a small detail most people walk right past, yet it holds an incredible story.
Right next to the entrance of an ancient hospital called Santo Spirito, you’ll notice a small metal grill with a wooden wheel behind it.
In the Middle Ages, many families were too poor to raise their children. Some babies were even abandoned in the river.
So the Pope had this wheel installed in the wall of the hospital, allowing mothers to come here, place their newborns inside and leave them anonymously, giving each child a chance to survive.
