Is the Trevi fountain open?

Yes, the Trevi fountain is now open. But there are some new rules to follow.

is the trevi fountain open

The Trevi fountain has been closed due to renovation works for months during the second half of 2024. The renovations involved the lower part of the Trevi fountain, which was deteriorating.

This was due to the large crowds that continuously filled the lowest ground level of the Trevi fountain. This created the perfect environment for patinas of biological nature, limescale deposits, and other things that damaged the health of the monument. That’s why the city decided to go for extraordinary measure to prevent further deterioration.

On December 2024 the mayor of Rome inaugurated the opening of the Trevi fountain, but this time with specific rules for visitors.

What are the rules to visit the Trevi fountain?

Access to the Trevi fountain is open and for free, but limited. This is to avoid the deterioration that follows after consistent overcrowding of the monument.

There is a limit of 400 visitors at the time, from 9AM until 9PM. After 9PM there is no limit of visitors, and there will be free access until 9AM the following day. Therefore the Trevi fountain is still open for those who wish to go at sunrise or very early in the morning to take their photos without the crowds.

There will be some time to spend in line. The positive side is that the experience at the bottom of the fountain will be much more enjoyable and comfortable.

Are tickets needed to visit the Trevi fountain?

No, you do not need tickets to visit the Trevi fountain. You will just need to show up and, if you get there between 9AM and 9PM, stand in line. Look for the entrance sign to see where the line starts.

However you do need tickets to visit other areas, such as the Underground Aqueduct of the Trevi fountain, which has limited access and sells out real quick.

Tickets to the Underground Aqueduct of the Trevi fountain are included in our Underground Trevi fountain small group tour.
