Does the Trevi fountain light up at night?

The Trevi fountain is one of the most breathtaking views in Rome, that you should experience at different times of the day. As the sun moves, the light colors the fountain in different shades of white, pink and orange. But have you wondered what it looks like after sunset? Does the Trevi fountain light up at night?

Yes, it does. And it’s just as breathtaking as during the day.

Who takes care of the illumination of the Trevi fountain?

The lights of the Trevi fountain are taken care by Acea, the water company of Rome. To illuminate the Trevi fountain, Acea installed about 100 LED lights positioned in specific locations, to enhance the profiles and the beauty of the fountain.

There are 85 underwater light projectors, while 6 light projectors are outside of the water. Some lights are for example on the shell behind Ocean, to enhance his profile.

Most of the lights underwater instead define the body of the fountain, which is the cliff made of travertine stone and the statues with the horses on top of it.

This system of illumination makes the Trevi fountain lit up at night something you must absolutely see.

Are there light shows at the Trevi fountain at night?

On specific occasions in the city there will also be light shows on the Trevi fountain. For example when the BNL Internazionali di Tennis (International Tennis Tournament) takes place in Rome in May, there might be some light shows lighting up the Trevi fountain at night, to promote the event.

However these light shows are exceptional events that only happen on specific occasions.

Is it safe to walk by the Trevi fountain at night?

Absolutely yes. The city center of Rome is pretty safe, also at night. As a woman, I feel safe walking at night on my own. Of course always make sure you are street-smart, as you would be in any big city. Always keep your belongings visible to you and never leave them unattended. Avoid walking away from the main streets/squares into dark and isolated alleys. The same advice you would give in any big city. But Rome in general at night is a very enjoyable and relaxing experience. So don’t be afraid to walk out to see the Trevi fountain light up at night!

But don’t stop on the surface of the Trevi fountain. Go behind-the-scenes..

Most tourists in Rome come to the Trevi fountain, snap a selfie and then leave. But there’s much more to the Trevi fountain than what you see from the street level.

The Trevi fountain has so many secrets, such as the Fountain of the Lovers and the Underground Aqueduct that still brings the water to the Trevi fountain today since 19BC! Very few people know that you can visit this 2000 year old underground site. Check out our Underground Trevi fountain tour to live an experience like no other!
